Celebrating Lamai Lions

The world recently celebrated the existence of lions, and rightly so.  An incredible cat that provides endless amazement, especially at Lamai.

We are fortunate to have a healthy population of resident lions who grow in numbers every year; we always have some youngsters about who play and get up to all sorts of mischief. I bumped into one the other day….. Our Kopje and surrounding rock outcrops are local hangouts, lions lying around all day watching the food walk by and waking up at night to pounce on something nearby.

We have a small Suzuki jeep in camp that we use for transporting things between camps, about a fifth of the size of a normal Land Cruiser, I used it a few nights ago to go down to Mkombe’s house and came across two lionesses on the hunt.  They looked at me in this tiny little car and I swear for a moment they thought they could eat me and the car – I quickly rolled up the two windows, simultaneously, as the car is that small

This year has been particularly active as the migration is on our doorstep.  Three new young males have moved in on the Lamai prides’ territory and have forced two ‘Old Boys’” out, exciting times.  Two of the females were on heat a couple of weeks back and all sorts of mayhem broke out on one of the guest room verandas – just another magical day in the Serengeti.
