Rift Valley Lakes

The Great Rift Valley, created by the moving of tectonic plates beneath the crust of Africa, is home to many lakes that harbour extraordinary endemic species and some of them, such as Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria in Kenya, host millions of flamingoes at certain times of the year. These lakes include some of the oldest, largest and deepest lakes in the world with great biodiversity, while others are alkaline ‘soda lakes’ supporting highly specialised organisms. Lake Nakuru also has a healthy population of both black and white rhino and is one of the better places to see leopard in Kenya.
